Introduction
The holidays are a joyous time, often associated with traditional baking and cooking. However, if you’re looking to shake things up this season, there are plenty of alternative activities to engage in and enjoy. This blog highlights ten fun ideas that will bring joy and excitement to your holiday celebrations. As a personal trainer I know this season les people are working out and highly tempted with all of the goodies! I started a tradition when my daughter was 5 that we would make memories but not bake cookies! We have had countless adventures, still hang some of out adorable ornaments on the tree, and have zero regrets at the end of December! I hope this blog inspires you! Merry Christmas and never forget the real Reason for the Season!
1. Crafting Holiday Decorations
Unleash your creativity by crafting holiday decorations. Gather supplies such as paper, glue, and paints to make wreaths, garlands, or festive centerpieces. Not only is crafting a fantastic way to spend time, but it also provides personalized décor that will brighten your home. I love making cinnamon ornaments, clove pressed into oranges, and gumdrop trees. These include food but zero calories!
2. Host a Movie Marathon
Instead of spending hours in the kitchen, gather your loved ones for a holiday movie marathon. Select a series of classic holiday films or explore new releases, prepare some popcorn, and snuggle in for a cozy screening experience that’s sure to create lasting memories. Amazon Prime has some cute holiday films in their collection!
3. Go Ice Skating
Embrace the winter weather by hitting the local ice skating rink. Whether you’re a beginner or a pro, skating is a delightful way to enjoy the outdoors and engage in some healthy physical activity. Don’t forget to warm up afterward with some protein hot chocolate!
4. Volunteer for a Local Charity
This holiday season, consider giving back to your community. Volunteering at a local charity or soup kitchen can provide a fulfilling experience. Not only does it help those in need, but it can also bring you and your friends or family closer together through shared service.
5. Explore Nature with a Winter Hike
For those who love the great outdoors, a winter hike can be the perfect holiday adventure. Bundle up in warm clothing and explore picturesque trails in your area. Enjoy the tranquility of nature, and take time to appreciate the beauty of winter. Maybe take home a pinecone or two to turn into a cute bird feeder for the front yard. Collect acorns or leaves to turn into ornaments for your tree.
6. Start a Book Club
Why not use the holiday break to dive into some good reads? Start a book club with friends or family, and select a few holiday-themed books to enjoy together. Meet regularly to discuss passages and share perspectives, adding depth to your holiday gatherings. Thanks to a client, our family is ready a few pages of Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol every night bundled up on the couch! Get your own copy here!
7. Arrange a Game Night
Transform those quiet evenings into fun game nights! Pull out classic board games, card games, or engage in video gaming for some competitive fun. This interactive activity is a fantastic way to bond and keep spirits high during the holidays.
8. Organize a Progressive Dinner
Invite friends and neighbors for a traveling dinner where everyone prepares a dish. This way, you can enjoy a variety of homemade meals, wander the neighborhood to enjoy the lights and share cooking responsibilities while relishing each other's company. It’s an ideal way to get in those steps in and less pressure of preparing everything yourself.
9. Discover Local Festivals or Markets
Holiday festivals and markets are always filled with cheer and excitement. Check out local listings and explore food stalls, crafts, and entertainment that make this time of year special. You might discover unique gift options and enjoy festive treats without having to bake!
10. Create a Gratitude Jar
Lastly, take a moment to reflect on the year by creating a gratitude jar with your loved ones. Every person can write down what they’re thankful for and place it in the jar. This activity serves as a beautiful reminder of the blessings and highlights from the past year. My step mother gave us one several years ago and it's wonderful to remember all of the big and small accomplishments, blessings, and joys we experience all year long! All you need is a mason jar and some craft supplies!
Conclusion
This holiday season, embrace fun and creativity with these ten enjoyable activities instead of baking. No matter how you choose to celebrate, remember that quality time spent with loved ones is what truly makes the holidays special.
